folk guitar strumming
Guitar song suggestions, beginner/intermediate?

I’m looking for my finger-picking style songs, I play acoustic guitar but I do have an Epiphone LP I occassionally like to rock out on. So far I’m learning Babe I’m Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin, parts of Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana, I can already play Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, and 316 by Van Halen.

I’m open to anything but I prefer folk rock type songs, kinda like landslide I guess.

And how about just a fun guitar song, whether its a strumming song or picking song.
Nothing Else Matters is a song my teacher had mentioned a few times, I’ll probably be learning that in a few weeks.

looks like we got the same style. learning landslide-fleetwood mac right now, and already learned babe I’m gonna leave you-zeppelin. let me give you my list. I’vre spent many hours looking up the bast ‘popular’ songs to play. I used to go busking and found a lot of good ones, real money makers if you know what I mean.

Zeppelin- Over the hills and far away, ten years gone, Bron-yr-aur, tangering, since I’ve been loving you, Bron-yr-aur stomp.
Metallica- Nothing else matters, One, Fade to black, sanitarium.
The Eagles- hotel california.
Eric Clapton- Signe, Tears in heaven, Layla (acoustic unplugged version).
Kansas- Dust in the wind.
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Under the bridge, scar tissue, roadtrippin.
Pink Floyd- Wish you were here.
Lynyrd Skynyrd- Simple Man
James Taylor- Fire and Rain
Pearljam- Yellow Ledbetter
Creedence Clearwater Revival- Bad Moon Rising, Looking out my back door
Rolling stones- Angie
Johnny Cash- Ring of fire, Folsom Prison Blues
The Black Crowes- She Talks to angels

Hope you like

With certain stringed instruments why is the non-dominant hand used for the more precise motion’s?

ex. guitar and violin(for right handed folk) Any who I was just thinking about this today, seems like the dominant hand should be used to control the pitch, while the less dominant should be used for the easier strumming or bowing motions. Exp. = played violin for 5 years as a child. Getting my bow re-haired and starting to play again!!!!! Considering retraining myself using my dominant hand to control pitch.

Also are you familiar with any musicians that use their dominant hand for fretting/pitch/etc.

Thanks.
No short cuts here…lol. As a child I was unable to perform vibrato, and now I know that I can overcome that past limitation.

Depends on the instrument. Left-handed guitarists sometimes use a left-handed guitar to have the same dominant/non-dominant set-up as right handed players (this is, r.h. for pitch, l.h. for plucking). Others learn on a regular guitar, so their set-up is reversed. And then there is the very famous case of Jimi Hendrix, who played left-handed on a right-hand guitar strung backward.

I don’t know of anyone reversing the set-up of bowed-string instruments, such as your violin. In medieval times, bowed-string instruments were very simple, and the left hand didn’t do much but hold the instrument in place & change a few pitches, while the right hand moved freely for bowing, rhythm, etc. In that context, it makes sense to have the non-dominant hand hold the instrument while the dominant hand does most of the movement.

Modern bowed strings have evolved such that the left hand no longer supports the weight of the instrument, hence its greatly increased mobility and the virtuoso technique it makes possible. Keep in mind, though, that demands on the right/dominant hand have increased accordingly. Playing the correct pitches in tune is really a basic playing skill. What differentiates the truly great players from the very competent ones (the difference, say, between a professional section violin in the orchestra and the soloist, both of whom are probably of equal competence technically) is the ability to make the instrument “sing” or “speak” lyrically with the bow.

This said, either hand can learn to do either job with enough time and practice (since left-handed players have no problem with right-handed instruments). For example, pianists make equal demands on both hands. In fact, for reasons unexplained, many right-handed pianists feel that their left hand is “better” than their right hand.

In your case, it seems you would be better off just learning to play like everybody else, since you are not likely to find a reversed violin. They may look symmetrical save for the chin rest, but the soundpost inside is off to one side; you would also need someone to cut a bridge specially for it, and you’re not likely to find anyone who has any experience doing that. And forget about finding a supportive teacher!

All in all, I think you would be creating more problems for yourself. There really are no shortcuts, just more practice!

Most of all, keep playing!
