Multi Effect Vs Stompbox
Guitar effect pedals: Boss ME-70 multi effect pedal Vs. Boss DS-1 distortion pedal?
ive been wanting a distortion pedal so i could switch from clean to dirty more easily. i have a soldano tube amp and a PRS. i was originally going to get the DS-1 but then i saw the ME-70. its has various types of distortion plus some other cool effects. im not too familiar with pedals so im not too sure though on which to get. will the distortion on the me-70 be not as good as if i just bought each seperate stompbox???? im assuming there is a sound quality difference but as long as its not too noticable i dont mind. (also price doesnt really matter. the DS-1 is about $40 and the me70 is like $300) thanks!!
The ME-70 actually has a DS-1 setting on it. It mimics all the classic Boss distortion pedals. I’ve found it to be a really good emulation. I can tell the difference, especially from a Keeley modded DS-1, but I’ve got a good ear for those sort of things.
I’ve got the ME-50 and I love it. It sounds great and is really simple to use. The best part is that all the knobs are dedicated to a specific setting, so I don’t need to navigate through dozens of pages of a menu to adjust a single setting.
I’ve got a bunch of friends who are pedal junkies, and I’ve never had anyone say anything bad about the sounds I coax out of the ME-50. It’s not only quick to set up, but I’m really good at dialing in the sound I want really quickly too. Other musicians appreciate that.
If you haven’t started building up a pedal collection, I’d go with the ME-70. It’s an excellent piece of equipment that you’ll use for years to come. Any time you’ve got a last minute gig and you don’t want to haul out all your gear, you can grab the ME and set up in 5 minutes. I encourage you to try out the “real-deal” pedals as well, but a good multi-effects unit is really nice to have around.
