Guitar Stomp Box Setups
louder output from a stomp box?
I have this Behringer ADI21 stomp box. here’s a link:

It has two outputs, 1/4 TS and XLR which can be BOTH used at the same time. One time I used the XLR to connect to a PA system, and the 1/4TS to a guitar amp for a “thicker” sound.
My question is this: I plan to use one of the outputs as a monitor — using earphones, while the other still goes to the PA system. But when I tried the setup, either I can’t hear anything from my earphones or I get the weakest sound, I can barely hear it.
What do I need to do to make it work with the earphones?
You need a headphone amplifier. It’s usually a little two-to-three-inch cube with an input jack, a headphone jack, a volume knob, maybe a power switch, and a jack for an AC adapter. The 1/4″ output of your stomp box is line level, not headphone level, so it’s much too weak to drive the headphones. The headphone amplifier will amplify the signal to a level appropriate for the headphones. If you want to try out that solution first without spending any money, you could use a 1/4″ to 1/8″ stereo plug adapter to plug in a set of PC speakers, then plug the headphones into the speakers (assuming they have a headphone jack). If that works, you’re on the right track, but the quality of most PC speakers isn’t that great, so you’d probably still want to buy a proper headphone amplifier.
