Home Recording for a noob!?
So I’m using Sony Acid Studio. I’ve tried going from my guitar or effects pedal using a regular guitar cable with a little adapter to go into my mic jack (looks like a headphone input) I’m going to try to run my Guitar through a mixing board and then use a XLR to USB cable to go to my computer. Is going through the USB port going to give me a better sound?
All the XLR USB cables I’ve seen are like $40. Are there any cheaper ones?
I don’t see that being a good move.
XLR to USB is not going to give you the best quality, because nowhere in your process to do you have a analog to digital converter.
You need an Audio Interface to be able to get the guitar signal from analog to digital via usb. The Interface has a built-in converter so you don’t lose quality.
There are also Mixers with built in USB or Firewire capabilities. These are a little more spendy though. $150-$200 an Audio Interface would definitely solve your problem though.

Question about IGuitar?
so i found a video with a product called Iguitar. From the video it appears you can just plug the guitar in to your computer through a USB port. Does anyone know if you can plug a distortion pedal in when using this product.

You use a plugin( guitar rig, amplitube, etc) to get distortion.
