How to make a guitar note last longer?
It might sound like a stupid question, but how do you make a note last longer? Like in the beggining of Skid Row’s “In a Darkened Room”? Do you need effects pedal or is it in amplifier? I know you can hold it, but for example how do you slide from 12th fret to 10th fret without sound fading away when you move your finger? Thanks for any help
Actually, he is using his neck pickup for that solo. The neck pickup typically has a little more sustain than the bridge pickup because the string vibrates more towards its center than the ends. Of course it gets a different sound as well. Turning your gain up a little also helps. Make sure you volume on your guitar is all the way up when playing it. Their are effects to help with sustain, Ebow, Sustainiac, the Fernandes Sustainer and Compression/Sustainer pedals. But he doesn’t use any of it, maybe a little compression. Try it with the neck pickup.

What is the difference between a glass guitar slide or a metal one?
Does it effect the sound or is it just the quality of the slide?
There is a definite difference sound. You’ll notice a much warmer sound when you use a glass slide as opposed to a metal slide which has a sharper, brassier tone. I typically see glass slides used more, especially in blues bands, though I’ve seen a couple Delta blues players using metal slides to get a much dirtier, gritty sound. Ceramic slides are also available, giving an even warmer, softer sound than glass. I use glass, but that’s just my preference.
