Power-tube pedal – I’ve only ever heard these terms used seperately… A power tube is the part of a tube amplifier that amplifies the signal from the preamp. Not sure how it relates to a pedal.
Phase shifter (Phaser) – An effect, but I can’t really describe it, you have to hear it. Van Halen used to use one sometimes.
Rotary speaker simulator – An effect designed to simulate the sound of one of the old keyboard amps which often had speakers that physically rotated at different speeds. It gives an interesting effect as the sound is focused on different points at different times.
Tremolo – Can be a couple of things… The whammy bar bridge is often incorrectly referred to as a tremolo. As far as effects go, it is a pedal that boosts and cuts volume at a given rate, giving a similar effect to cranking your guitar volume knob open and closed repeatedly as you play.
Compressor – An effect that levels out your sound by flattening any particularily low or high signal to within a given range. It can also increase sustain by bringing a fading note back up to the appropriate volume.
Octaver – Overlays one or more additional signals on top of your playing, at specific octaves, usually one or two up or down from whatever you played. Can give various sounds depending on settings, but often used to give a very low, heavy sound.
Pitch shifter – Just what it sounds like… Raises or lowers the pitch of what you’re playing.
