What’s the name of this guitar effect pedal?

How do I make that sound from Radio Friendly Unit Shifter by Nirvana on guitar?
I’m not talking about the feedback at the start, but like a squeaky sound near the beginning of the song. It’s at around 0:31 of the song in the video here, and it’s sorta in the background again at 1:44.

How do I do that sound on guitar? Is there a technique or do I have to use an effects pedal? Thanks.
This seems to easy. The only guitar sound at 0:31 is muted strings. To do this, you turn up the distortion and touch all the strings with your left hand. Just don’t touch them hard enough to actually play a fretted note. Then you strum. And it makes a sound like “ccrrk”.
