Guitar Effects Arrangement

boss pedals:Could you prescribe me an arrangement for my ds2 2and cs3 to get a smooth solo sound from it?
boss guitar pedals not boss multi-effects
I actually had to look up what the initials meant. I thought that CS-3 was a chorus, but nope, that’s a Compression/Sustainer. The DS-2 is the Turbo Distortion.
First off, while I’m sure you’ve figured out that the Turbo Distortion distorts your guitar signal, what you may not know is what the compression/sustainer pedal does. The function of a compressor is to make the difference between the loudest notes you play and the quietest notes you play smaller. That’s it in a nutshell. The complication comes when you start talking about something called the noise floor.
In every audio signal there exists some point at which you go from a soft tone to a softer tone to quiet to really really quiet… to silence. Or, in many cases, the signal fades away into the background hiss or static of your amp. The more you amplify a signal the more of this background hiss or static you will get. The higher quality your equipment is, the less static, and there’s things you can do to lower the amount of that noise, but it will always be there, at some level. That level is known as the noise floor…. the level at which you cannot discern your signal from the background noise of your audio system.
What a compressor will do is lower the loudest signals, bringing them closer to your quietest ones. This will usually add sustain, which is great, but when you turn up the gain to compensate for that loss of volume, you bring up the noise floor. Not a problem for clean so much, but it can be a problem for dirty sounds, especially high-gain.
Anyways, that’s some of the theory behind it. The standard arrangement is to have your signal effects first in your audio chain (noise reduction, compression), your modulation and pitch effects second (chorus, flanger, wah), your delay effects third (looping, delay, echo, reverb), and your distortion last.
Plugging your pedals into this formula would mean going from your guitar to the CS-3 to the DS-2 to your amp. If you are playing through a clean channel on your amp and using the DS-2 for your rhythm distortion, you would then leave your compressor off until it’s time for a solo boost, in which case you would step on the CS-3. Without knowing your amp or if you have channel switching capabilities, that is how I would run it. If you do have a 2 channel amp, then I would always have the compressor on to keep your signal tight and focused, and use the DS-2 for the solo boost, and use the amp’s footswitch to go between clean and dirty.
Understanding how your compressor works will be the key to using it well. Most people don’t get it.
Attack is how fast or slow it takes to kick in. If the knob is all the way to the left or all the way to the right and your notes seem to ‘swell’ in, then that setting is a “slow” attack. The sustain is how long the compressor is active – one side is a quick decay (compressor not on for very long) the other is a slow decay (compressor on for longer). The ideal setting for you will depend on your solo style, but if you play faster than the attack on your compressor your notes won’t sound clean, and if your decay is longer than the notes you play your notes will “breathe” and “pump”. You’ll know it when you hear it. Use the volume knob on the CS-3 to make the signal louder. If using it as a solo boost, you want the sound with it on to be louder than off, and if it’s always on, the sound with it on the same level as the sound with it off.
I hope that’s made sense.
Good luck!
Saul

Guitarist John Williams?
John Williams recorded “The Entertainer” on his “John Williams Plays the Movies” CD.
It was remarkable how his guitar technique and choice of key worked together to reproduce an original “keyboard effect”. Joplin would have been more than proud. John always does his own arrangements and furthermore he seldom publishes these “secrets” to the public. I own 2 arrangements to this piece, but the key (which I believe he did in C), is not one of them. The arrangements that I have are a technically difficult after several measures. Do you know how do get a copy of his score for this recording? It is truly a gem.
This discussion thread talks about the tuning for the piece and also contains an Italian link to the transcription you are referring to:
