vocal ‘resonance’?
Alright, I probably call it the wrong word, but you know how when a good singer holds a note and the pitch will fluctuate about that note like someone holding a note on guitar.. and it sounds awesome? Is this a natural effect their voice has due to the physical set up of their larynx etc.. or is it a technique that they are trained to do? Being a guitar player, I have a feeling it is probably a little of both (‘natural’ and learned), as is the case for musicians with string instruments.
I probably should have just said ‘opera singers’ for example..
As a follow up to Whippersnapper, everybody does have a natural vibrato, however often it takes training to learn how to do properly. An untrained singer will often use their throat and jaw to create a vibrato, this often will create a more “wobbly” sound. If you look at some pop singers, you can actually see their jaws moving as they sustain their vibrato. I know Whitney Houston used to do this. Don’t be fooled… this is bad. A natural vibrato is created by the free flow of air over the larynx, without a tension in the throat or jaw. Most people that you hear in pop have more of a created vibrato than a natural vibrato. It can take years of voice training to learn how to use your vibrato.

How do you do a distortion effect on Sibelius 5?
I’ve used Sibelius 5 for more than a year and I think its a great program. The guitars as they are play very clean and soft tones, which is exactly what I don’t want. I want to know if there’s a way to distort the sound of the guitars on sibelius 5, because having to imagine sounds that aren’t there gets frustrating. I would very much appreciate knowing another technique to alter the sound if no such technique exists on Sibelius 5. Please help.
I don’t believe you can add distortion or any other effects to Sibelius because it’s purpose is primarily to create music notation. Sibelius works in conjunction with the Pro Tools DAW (digital audio workstation). In Pro Tools there are many plug-ins that will allow you to add almost any effects you want. You can also try getting your self a guitar distortion pedal and placing it between your computer and your speakers if you have external speakers. Then you can use the pedal to add distortion to the sound coming our of Sibelius.
