guitar effect pedal order
Guitar effects pedal chain: what is the PROPER order for these pedals?

I have been playing the guitar for 33 years. I like my pedal chain the way it is set up. I’ve tried various other variations, but this is my chain: Guitar to Digitech Whammy Pedal to DS-1 distortion to Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man to CS-2 Compressor Sustainer. I would like to know the recommended way these pedals should be chained together. Also, where is the best place to put a volume pedal and a wah-wah pedal in this chain? Thank you for your suggestions.

The way you have it is fine. It’s all subjective to the order you want, and in what creates the less noise. If you have too much noise, you can eliminate or reduce it with a noise suppressor. The order you have is fine, but if you have an effects loop, you can move the memory man through the loop. The loop is the best place for modulation effects, like delay, phaser, tremolo, chorus. The rest should be upfront, after the guitar.

If you add the wah pedal, it should go after the volume pedal. The volume pedal controls the volume, so it should be before everything, to cut the signal from the guitar out first. Last should be the compressor, like you have it. I like my delay in the chain before the compressor, as it will distort every note a little bit… which is personal preference. I also have a second delay in the loop, for solo’s. I make sure that delay has a “mix” feature, which allows me to adjust the volume of the delay in the mix, so I put it back as sort of a hidden delay or a light “background” delay. This just comes down to preference.

Which guitar effect pedals should i buy to create a great blues tone ?

I’m leaning towards the boss blues driver with the keeley mod and I’ve already ordered the Boss super overdrive to try as well. Is the keeley mod worth it ? Do I need a compressor ? If so, Which one ? Mxr custom, keeley mod, Boss cs3/cs2. Is it worth keeping my boss ge7 equaliser or should I sell it to create funds ? Also I have an Ibanez OD850. It’s vintage and sounds like a fuzz pedal like a Big Muff rather than an overdrive. Does anyone know how much it would be worth ?

More than anything you need a tube amp that you can crank to the max. That’s where most of the tone comes from… not the pedals.

Get something in the 20-30W range. If you get a 100W amp, you’ll NEVER be in a situation where you can crank it. Even if you’re playing a big football stadium. If you’re playing a venue that large, you’re getting mic’d. Once that mic goes down in front of your amp, your volume has to come to, which means you have to say “bye-bye” to that sweet tube tone.

Keep the GE7. It’s always a good idea to have a couple equalizer pedals around. One handy thing to try out is to stick an EQ pedal on either side of your distortion. Experiment to figure out how different incoming frequencies affect the distortion, then use the other EQ to shape it after the fact. Find your perfect tone, then look at the curves you’ve set on each EQ. Get some pickups that match the response of the first EQ, then set your amp’s tone settings to match the second. Now you’ve got killer tone with fewer pieces of gear mucking about with it, which is always better.
