Which multi-effects pedals to get.?

I have narrowed my search down some, and have decided that of the digitech line, the GNX3000 is a pretty good deal, but if I save up some more, I might be able to get a Boss GT-10. I’m not in a band, ( I play at home on a line 6 practice amp) so I don’t know if I really need all of the pro stuff the Boss does. Should I just get the Digitech, or should I hold out for the Boss?

Boss GT-10

Also, would it be better to get a used BOSS unit for around the same price, such as a GT-3 or GT-6?

I’ve always liked BOSS over Digitech because they build their stuff hardier. You can drop a BOSS pedal out a window and it will survive.

Sound quality though? More or less identical.

I would say that, since you aren’t touring, or need your effects rig to survive spilled beer or whatnot, to go with the money saving option, just make sure it does everything you want.

Boss GT10, Guitar help?

Hi, i just got a BOSS GT10 effects board for my guitar and i need help getting a specific sound, im trying to recreate the sound made by the band(s) Veil of maya, and/or The faceless, id really appreciate the help. thanks /b/ros

Well, that’s kind of an impossible question to answer because each of those bands sound different on almost every song. So, what song specifically and what specific part of that song would be helpful however, I have a GT-10 and I really love it! I can create almost any sound with it except where I need help from a synthesizer and for that I can use my Juno-G. But, the art of recreating someone else’s sound comes entirely from spending a lot of time with the GT-10. You listen to the sound you want and then you identify the obvious effects that are present in that sound such as distortion, delay, echo, or reverb or none of those but, perhaps a flanger, or other efects are that easy to detect by listening to them. If you don’t know what some of the individual effects sound like, then just hook up your guitar and a set of headphones to the GT-10 and just play with the individual effects until you know what they sound like.

The human mind is an incredible thing. It will remember sounds and associate those sounds to notes on a guitar or piano or both and it will also associate sound with buttons or presets on the GT-10. I listened to a few Veil of Maya songs just now and I noticed that many of there distortion guitar effects are quite dry, that is they are probably using distortion and overdrive and an EQ but no reverb or delay or echo effects and no other flange or phaser or anything like that. So, you might want to try playing around with the EZ Tone on the GT-10 and start with just distortion, overdrive and EQ. The EQ is used to give emphasis to high, mid, or low notes. If the sound is deep, for instance, give more EQ to the low notes, etc. You’ll have to try various levels of distortion and overdrive to tune the sound you are creating until it sounds closer to the sound you are trying to achieve. It’s also a very good idea to go through all the presets on the GT-10 and write down any that you believe you can use or that you especially like. For instance, there are a few really good wet distortion presets that I particularly like. I write metal songs and for the most part, I create my own sounds to go with those songs but the following GT-10 presets are just awesome the way they are (in my opinion at least). I also have the advantage of plugging my guitar into the Roland Juno-G and using many of those effects as well and there are some awesome guitar distortions on the Juno-G. Try these on the GT-10:

Pedal 2 – P49 Dirty Synth Bass
Pedal 3 – P49 VIO – Guitar
Those are two of my favorite presets. You should check those out.

Pedal 2 – P44 – RECRYTH (could be a good sound for you)
Pedal 2 – P43 – Warn Overdrive -You might try using this preset and turning off the reverb and adjusting the EQ to get the sound you want

Anyway, walk through all the presets and notice which ones light up the OD/DS (that’s overdrive and distortion) and see if there are any of those presets that you can use to get the sounds you are
looking for. If you need a dryer sound, then turn off the reverb and delay if they are lit up.

If you spend time with the GT-10 it will become your best friend. There really is no shortcut to mastering it. Once you do, you’ll be able to hear a sound and instantly know what you need to do with the GT-10 to get that sound. Your mind will remember what you have previously done. So, do as much as you can with it and the more you do, the more you will intuitively know about creating unique sounds with it. Good luck to you!
