folk music dc
A question for the more…um…”Mature” members of R/P?

Ok, the old folks. It’s a question for you old people. (I’m not quite 17 yet! I still can get away with this!)

I understand from almost everyone here on this forum that today’s mainstream is crappy. I get that, and I agree with it.

What I am curious about though is what was mainstream back then, during the 60s-80s/early 90′s. Were bands like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC and other rock legends in the mainstream and as huge/popular back then, or were they under the radar?

BQ: Is it ever possible for mainstream music to get down to some solid roots, or will it always remain as bloated corporation garbage?
Ambiguous- Adj. Open to or having several possible meanings or interpretations; equivocal. i.e. an ambiguous answer.

I knew what that mean before, but I just want to make sure I please Shades. :D
Pattern Juggler, FTW.

Aww, Honey ~ (you call me old/ I treat you like one of my kids ;-D)
Those groups were/ are huge. No doubt about it. They were NOT under the radar *because* way back then…. we had a very limited access to music ~ unlike today. We had the radio / very little TV / and friends. Those were the *only* ways we heard music (unless our parents were cool which mine were not).

So… everybody was listening to the same things and exposed to the same things. Through the ’70s, anyway. MTV blew the door off popular music and changed it’s “face” forever ~ for better or for worse, music is much more “visible” nowadays. In the ’70s and before, you could be ugly as sin and as uncoordinated as a newborn giraffe ~ didn’t matter because all that DID matter was the music you made.

BQ: Can’t answer/ question too ambiguously worded. Now go look up ambiguous. It’s your homework ;-)

A little good cop/ bad cop!

Good work, Nigel :-)

When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through “Cheek to Cheek” and getting down and bluesy on “Stormy Monday” on this live set from 1996, it’s nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice’s vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious–and soul-shaking–on the slower side, as with Paul Simon’s “Bridge over Troubled Water,” Buffy Sainte-Marie’s “Tall Trees in Georgia,” and…
