Folk Guitar Types

Learn to play folk guitar?
i want to learn to play guitar, but i have absolutely no idea where to begin.
i’ve done research, and there seems to be a lot of different answers on my questions:
should i learn tabs or standard notation?
should i start learning chords or notes first?
whats the best way to learn without a teacher?
also, i want to learn to play folk and indie-ish type stuff,
like the decemberists, the mountain goats, bob dylan, bright eyes, etc.
so any help on this and some easy songs that you think i would like would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Hi,
I’m a guitar teacher and the webmaster of abclearnguitar.com. Perhaps I can help you…
Q. should i learn tabs or standard notation?
A. It’s not necessary to learn standard notation, but it is helpful to have a basic understanding of rhythm and how to keep time.
A. You should definitely learn how to read Tab. It’s easy and will provide you with one of the most common ways for learning how to play songs on guitar. Lots of songs are available for free on the internet and they are usually written in Tab.
Q. should i start learning chords or notes first?
A. Individual notes are easier to play than chords for most beginners. However, you can play some chords using only one finger. The important thing is to learn easy chords first so you can build your coordination skills and strength.
Q. whats the best way to learn without a teacher?
A. When I first started learning guitar all I used was a chord book. Today it’s much easier because you can access lots of information on the internet for free or very cheap. For example, I offer several free guitar lessons on my website that are designed specifically for beginners just like you.
Hope that helps answer your questions.
BTW… I love Bob Dylan and “Blowin In The Wind” was one of the first songs I learned how to play on guitar. :0)
All the best in you musical a adventure!

First Acoustic Guitar – Steel String or Nylon String?
What the difference ?
which type of guitar should i get, i prefer more indie folk like bon iver.
and what a good guitar model/brand, i should look out for?
Steel and nylon stringed guitars are for different purposes, different kinds of music. Nylon is easier to play, but if the kind of music you want is with steel strings you might as well start out with steel strings because you’re going to have to learn it anyway.
I never heard of Bon Iver, but I just checked him out on YouTube, and he’s playing a nylon stringed guitar. So yes, I guess that’s what you’d want. 8^) (His style would work with steel strings too, though.)
As for a starting guitar, I’ve found that many cheap ‘beginner’ guitars are almost completely unplayable. If you didn’t already play the guitar, you’d think it was -you-. 8^< So it might be a good idea to bring someone with you who can play a guitar to help you pick one out. If you get one on EBay or mail-order or online, make sure you can return it. Nylon-stringed guitars are a little simpler to build because the strings don't exert as much tension, but a really good one can be very expensive.
