Folk Guitar And Classical Guitar
Should i buy an electric guitar?
I have been learning folk and classical guitar for nearly a year and i really love it and my teacher tells me i’m really good (so i’m not imagining it, lol!). Is the technique for playing electric guitar very different from these other styles?
What does your teacher say? I’d think it was a decent idea if it interests you.
The big difference is that electric uses much thinner strings. The technique of playing lead on electric guitar involves bending the notes by sliding a string up or down along the fret–some of the most notable rock guitarists (Hendrix, Gilmore, Clapton) can be seen pushing the high e-string up to around the vicinity of the A-string on some bends.
Most electric guitarists use a pick, but many make do with fingers (notably Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac). And many use both techniques, Jerry Garcia for example.
Note that when you’re buying an electric, your tone will depend on three things: pickups, effects, and the amp-speaker combo. A low- or mid-priced electric with an excellent amp and the right effects will sound much better than a top-of-the-line Fender Strat with a crummy amp and no effects. And you can always replace pickups, so take that under consideration when you’re shopping.

I am a beginner.. and I was wondering.. do I buy a classical or a folk guitar?
Which one needs less tuning and doesn’t hit the frets? I just bought a folk guitar with brass strings, and my tuner is ridiculous and most of the strings keep hitting the frets making a buzzing sound. It also sounds too metallic.
Since you already bought a “steel-string” guitar maybe you can “salvage”
the purchase by having tech adjust the “action” of the strings.
“Action” is simply described as “how much push or pressure”
you place on the strings to produce a sound.
The higher the distance of the string to the fret-board the
more pressure necessary to bring out the sound.
It is often referred as “high” action or “low” action.
Each player have their own individual preference.
Another possible (but not likely) problem you could be facing
is that the fret board itself is warped.
This could almost always can be corrected by a guitar tech.
Now in the event that you have to replace your present guitar
I would recommend that you try a nylon-string (also known as
classical) guitar for two major reasons.
1:Nylon strings are much easier to play (less punishing) for
the bare fingers and you can play longer periods of time without
discomfort on the tip of the fingers.
2:Nylon strings sound is “less metallic” that steel strings.
The sound is “mellower” and many players prefer such a sound.
As far as musical styles: Nylon strings can play any styles
that steel-strings or electric (flat-board) guitars play.
Nylon strings guitars is often refer to as “classical” guitars only
because is the preferred strings by performers of “classical Music”.
A “guitar” tuner should not be source of your guitar “problem”.
Many “tuners” have an extra option to tune a “Bass” guitar
make sure yours is set to G (for guitar) and not to B (for Bass)
The notes for both on the open strings should be the same
but the “sound frequency” will be different.
I hope this suggestions be of some help.
Good Luck and Enjoy Your Guitar.
