How to sound more like Metallica or Megadeth? Buy a distortion pedal or an amp that has a built in distortion?

Hi all, I am not too familiar with guitars and gadgets so here goes. Last Christmas, I bought my 12 year old son an electric guitar from Target. You know those “starter electric guitars” for amateurs? And it came with an Amp and claimed to have a built in distortion (it has a knob for Gain and Tone) Now my son wanted to sound like his idol which is Metallica or Megadeth. I am confused because I checked out Guitar Center, there is this thing Called a Distortion Pedal, and they are also selling Amps which have a built in distortion in them. Which should I purchase in order for my son to sound like his idols? Thanks for all your help. By the way I am debating on these two items. Which would you suggest?

Don’t get the BOSS DS1. I have that and it’s the biggest waste of money I’ve spent on a pedal. It’s just the same sound you would get from an amp but with a little more distortion.
As far as I know, Dave Mustaine uses a Marshall JCM 800 with EL34s. I don’t know what your budget is, but if I were to choose between the two I would get the amp for him. Of course you can get a better one at a local music store for about the same price (used).
