Electric Guitar Effects Software
Recording electric guitar onto PC?
So I’m guitarist for a band and I want a way to record some songs and riffs on the cheap.
I’m thinking of buying a 1/4″ to 1/8″ jack cable to plug in from my amp headphone output to my computer. The setup will be like this:
Fender Stratocaster > 1/4″ amp cable > Marshall MS2 (crappy little practice amp but has a decent overdrive) > 1/4″ to 1/8″ jack cable > PC line-in
I deliberately didn’t go out of my way to get a fantastic amp, because I figured I could add the effects while using a good editing software. Will this work? I read on the page below about it and I want to make sure.

It will work for scratch tracks and will sound lousy. But, if you are tight on cash, that would be fine only for reference. If you need to edit your tracks I suggest downloading Audacity; it’s free and is a great basic program.
However, if you can come up with $200, you can get a Zoom H2. That’s what I use for recording and it sounds clear and is portable and can be transferred to your PC easily by just transferring the data on the card to your PC. You can even use it in a band setting and record everyone at once while practicing.
Best Buy has them and that’s where I got mine.

should i buy an less expensive electric guitar+amplifier or an expensive guitar & use comp s/w for effects?
i have limited buget. should i go for an less expensive guitar and amplifier or should i buy an good + expensive guitar and use some software like guitarFX BOX for effects like distortion.
Spend your money on the guitar. There is nothing more discouraging than trying to start out on an instrument that’s physically difficult to play. If it has high action, doesn’t hold tuning well, etc. it’s just hard to be motivated. Plus, the better the quality of signal you put out from the instrument, the better whatever you put it into sounds. And the cleaner the reproduced sound, the more you hear your mistakes and can work on eliminating them.
You don’t have to go high dollar anymore to get a decent quality guitar. The Fender Squire series goes as low as $130 and are fairly decent. Most of the major manufacturers have something in this range, but it’s kind of hit and miss. Best to take an experienced player with you to buy and let them give you an idea of how playable it is. If you have in the $500 range to spend, the PRS SE series is a great pick. Very solid guitars and a lot of choices to fit your personal style. Also has respect from most any genre of music.
I would also suggest you buy a first guitar from a music store. The online shops cut some great deals, but a lot of times they don’t come to you properly set up, and a guitar that might be fairly decent at heart won’t play well for you. If you do order online, first thing you should do is have a local shop or experienced tech set it up properly – adjust the action, check the intonation, get the right gauge of strings on it, adjust the pickups, check for any neck bowing, etc. It is worth the $20-$30 they will charge you.
Spend your money on the guitar first. Then I’d think about maybe a headphone amp to play with, since you’ll find yourself away from the computer more often than not. Part of most people’s learning experience is keeping it with you day and night and plunking on it while you watch TV or whatever. And the others in the house will thank you during your initial practice sessions. If you have a music store to demo them, it’s best to shop it with your ears. Different people have radically different opinions about preset sounds.
If you go computer, I’d suggest a Line6 Guitarport. Nice sounds, good software, good user community. Very cheap. They have demo MP3s at the website, I believe.
Of course, when you get to the point that you’re ready to start playing for others, you’ll need to start looking for an amp you can be happy with.
