Build Stompboxes

How can I get better distortion out of my amp ?
I have a Peavey Vypyr 75 watt amp (Non Tube) and it sounds real professional but the only thing its lacking is a good crunchy distortion + it kinda sounds like there is a wall infront of the amp when I play. Ive messed around alot with the different settings – amp models, effects, stompboxes etc… that are built in but I cant get the kind of sound im looking for. Something like Mick Mars or Randy Rhoads. Would something like a Boss GT-8 give me a better variety of sounds if I got one and hooked it up to my amp ? Or should I shell out the $$$ and get a Marshall half stack ?
Don’t waste your money on a new stack, you can get a better sound with your gear, even with worse gear. Just look around on metal forums. I have the Metal Zone pedal, it’s decent, but there’s even better. I mean, just ask metalheads and they’ll be be able what you need in order to get a great sound. If you don’t have a tube amp, then you’re pretty much going to have to look around for distortion instead of relying on the amp.
