OD pedals into a Solid State/Modeling amp..?
okay, i have a Line6 Spider III 15 watt amp. i’ve only been playing for like 5 months now. I got myself a Boss OD-20 pedal, and soon be getting either a Boss DD-7 or Vox Time Machine. now, to my question:
in the future i’m looking to buy a real OD pedal. i really want to get a fulltone fulldrive2 or fulltone OCD. but i’ve read in many reviews and forums that these pedals do not sound good through the clean channel of SS/Modeling amps. although, i’ve also read a few times that although they don’t sound as good as with a tube amp, they still sound pretty good. so what are your thoughts on this? will the fulltone sound good through the clean of my amp? if not, what OD pedal should i consider? i also like Boss stuff, too. buying a tube amp would be nice, but not an option for me considering the cost..
OD pedals are meant to push a tube amps tubes harder so it “overdrives” the tubes. So they will sound IMMENSELY better with a tube amp. IMO, they aren’t much use through a solid-state amp, unless you’re pushing the OD into some kind of tube pre-amp before running it into the amp itself.
if they’re not an option for you, based on cost, then save up more. You can get a quality used Mesa/Boogie F-series combo for around $500-$800, a used Carvin V3 for under $1000, and loads more.
and if you want to stay with solid-state, at least go for a Line 6 Flextone. AMAZING modeling technology, and you’re not gonna be needing an OD either.

Guitarists: Expression pedal for Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy?
I’m purchasing a EHX Deluxe Memory Boy and would like to get an expression pedal to take full advantage of the DMB’s features. In the instructions of the DMB, one pedal EHX recommends is a Boss FV-500L. Upon further reading of other forums, others suggest the FV-500H (high impedance vs. low impedance). To add to the confusion, after contacting EHX directly, they suggest any pedal with a TRS sleeve. Has anyone tried any of these with a DMB? I’d like to get a volume/expression rather than just an expression, but I’m open to any suggestions to any pedal anyone may have successfully used with the DMB. Thanks for your time!
By the way, I’ll be using it with a guitar with passive pickups, but have not decided if I will use it before or after other effects pedals.
Check out this Boss pedal. Im not sure if its made anymore, but you might be able to find it with a little effort. Try ebay too…
