what is the official name for oriental string music and “folk” music.?
I was wondering what the official name for Oriental or east asian music was, such as music of china or japan, stuff like sakura?
Well it certainly depends on which country’s music you’re talking about, as Japan’s music and China’s music are not the same. Even within the different countries, there are different “varieties” of traditional music, string instruments, etc. If you’re talking about a koto rendition of the traditional Japanese folk song Sakura, like this:

then this is really just known as solo koto music. Most solo instrumental music in Japan is simply referred to by its instrument, and perhaps where it derives from. Koto music is also used in a genre called soukyoku, typically played on the guzheng (Chinese koto). There are also many other stringed instruments in traditional Japanese music, including the shamisen, biwa, and kokyuu. Other genres include the Noh and Kabuki theater styles, Gagaku (court music), and music used in the Kagura dance of the Shinto religion.
