How do guitar MIDI devices work?
there are midi footswitch controllers – im wondering what midi aspects they control – i’m not sure i understand what playing of guitar would control/be controlled by MIDI
it would make sense if a MIDI box controlled filters, plugins, FX pedals, etc. which were laid out in a MIDI sequencer, that you could tweak on the fly
I guess I was confused thinking you’d use the guitar as a trigger device, which wouldn’t make much sense, unless you had one of those MIDI guitars
how are some ways guitar interacts with MIDI at the performance level, not so much at the studio sequencing level – or what gives?
The only way I know of in which MIDI is used on the guitar itself is in the pickup, which couples to a preamp that reads a separate MIDI note from each string. That, of course, would require special processing hardware to turn the midi into audio.
Apart from that, footswitches are used to control any MIDI-enabled device – amps, preamps, eq, fx rack units, even things like lighting rigs and trigger-based samplers.
My rig at one point included a Behringer V-Amp Pro rackmount preamp controlled by a foot controller – I basically just used it to switch between presets, though. That’s pretty simple compared to some of the rigs I’ve seen. Oh yeah, and I did use it as a wah and volume pedal. On some settings I used the midi expression pedals to control delay length, amount of feedback for depth of echoes, gain, and treble boost, too, now that I think of it. I tried some crazier stuff out, like using an expression pedal to control two or three things at the same time, but I never made it really work the way I wanted to.

What is the fastest way of changing from rhythm to lead guitar WITHOUT a footswitch?
I don’t have a foot switch and my amp doesn’t support one, so i was wondering if there was an effects pedal which does this like a footswitch. I hate having to turn the knobs on my amp to change it, and i’m looking for a fast way.
I think you are talking about playing a solo so your sound cuts through the rest of the band rather than just being a rhythm guitar. What you want is a line boost pedal. There are a few different brands that make it and they are relatively easy to use, normally just one knob. They work for clean tone or distortion. Just make sure that when you use it with distortion, you put it AFTER your distortion pedal.
