Cheap Guitar Capo from ebay – good?

Hi,

There are some really cheap guitar capos on ebay. I’m a beginner and want to get a capo to play around with. I was wondering if these types are good or not because they are not expensive and seem to do the job. Does anybody have any review/ opinions?

Alright, so I probably won’t waste any money on that then. What do you think about the planet waves ns capo?

If it does the job, it does the job. Biggest problem you may run into with a cheap capo is that it can buzz if it’s loose, or screw up your intonation slightly by putting uneven pressure on the strings, or fall off at a bad time if it’s an evil capo out to get you.

If it doesn’t do any of those 3 things, go with it.

(I refuse to say whether a given capo works on a given guitar, because stuff like the shape of the neck of the guitar end up affecting the answer, so it really is a “you gotta try it and see” type of thing).

Spruce top vs. Cedar top acoustic guitars?

I am finally thinking about buying an acoustic guitar after playing electric for 4 years. I’ve been looking at some and realized there’s a significant difference in tone between Cedar and Spruce.

I’d like to know the differences, the advantages, and disadvantages of owning each. I’d be using it for mostly blues and folk. Sometimes with a slide. Also, if anyone can recommend a good acoustic between $150-$350 I’d greatly appreciate it. I’ve been looking at the seagull s6 entourage which is highly reviewed and it only costs $299.

Help?

Spruce produces a brighter tone while cedar produces a warmer tone. Spruce is also a significantly harder wood than cedar which is why a cedar top will get nicks and dents much faster than spruce. It is entirely a matter of taste; some people (like me) appreciate the brightness of spruce and others, the warmness of cedar. You should try both and make up your own mind.

There are plenty of custom builders – Jim Goodall and James Olson come to mind – that make lots of cedar topped guitars. Olsen’s James Taylor model comes with a cedar top.

While I have a great deal of respect for Seagull guitars as well as the other brands produced by LaSiDo of Canada, I feel that cedar on a dreadnought is a terrible combination. Dreads are bass-heavy in general which is why most of them come with spruce tops to offset that with some brightness. A cedar-topped dread is something you better make sure you like before you buy, but I find that they lack the high range. Good luck.
